JOEL

A book of the Old Testament, belonging to the invasion of Minor Prophets. It consists of four chapters in the Hebrew text and of three in the Authorized English Version, the second and third chapters of the Hebrew text being combined. Nothing is known of the prophet Joel, the son of Pethuel, but that he lived in Judah.

The book may be divided into two sections. The first of these describes an impending plague of locusts, which will leave such devastation in its wake that even the material for the meal-offering in the Temple will be unobtain¬able. The prophet urges the people to repent and fast and mourn so that utter catastrophe may be averted. Apparently the prophet’s words were heeded, for the second section contains a promise of deliverance and renewed prosperity. The book concludes with an apocalyptic vision of the Day of the Lord, which will be a day of judgment on the enemies of Israel.

The dating of the Book of Joel presents an exceedingly difficult problem and opinion varies widely among scholars. Some place the work as early as the reign of Joash (c.837-798 B.C.), others in the reign of Josiah or the period immediately following (seventh century B.C.), and still others maintain that the book is post-exilic and suggest dates in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. Arguments, based on language, allusions to contemporary events, and theological development have been offered for and against each of the proposed dates. Some scholars have attempted a solution by ascribing the book to two authors and assigning a different date for each of the sections.
